FACT CHECK: Ateneo University Press placed anti-Marcos book on sale due to a lack of buyers #FactsFirstPH

Rating: FALSE

The Facts

On May 27, the Ateneo University Press held a special limited offer of P450.00 per copy of The Conjugal Dictatorship of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos due to paper inconsistencies and lack of supply.

It could be seen in the product descriptions of the book’s listings on Shopee and Lazada that the printer used different kinds of paper due to erratic import supply which was why it only had limited stocks and was sold at cheaper prices.

On May 31, the Du30 MEDIA Network page released a post claiming that the Ateneo University Press was holding an anti-Marcos book sale due to a lack of buyers. It is important to note that the Du30 MEDIA Network is a Duterte propaganda Facebook page.

The post had the caption “Anti-Marcos book. Binenta na ng bagsak presyo dahil hindi mabenta o walang may bumibili.”

The page shared a screenshot of the Ateneo University Press Facebook page’s post for a limited sale offer of “The Conjugal Dictatorship of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos,” an exposé book on the corruption and crime of the Marcoses written by journalist Primitivo Mijares.

On June 7, the Ateneo University Press announced that they were taking reservations for copies of The Conjugal Dictatorship of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos due to the high demand from buyers.

But then other publishing houses in the Philippines, including Ateneo de Naga and smaller presses, also held their book sales for Lazada and Shopee during their 5-5, 6-6. 7-7 promo sales.

Some books from the smaller presses even discounted their books at 90 percent and these were bought immediately.

It turned out that the National Book Development Board partly subsidized the sales of these Filipiniana books, including those against the Marcos regime.

For those constantly stressed by the book sales, we would advise that they start reading books and not just depend on YouTube and TikTok for their “education.”
