FACT CHECK: Darryl Yap was booed at the 2022 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival #FactsFirstPH

Claim: Darryl Yap was booed at the 2022 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival

Rating: TRUE

The Facts

Controversial director Darryl Yap was booed when his name appeared in the credits of “Angkas,” a film he produced with several others.

However, contrary to what the news outfit Publiko posted, Yap was booed by the crowds during the Gala Night, not at the Awards Night, as confirmed by attendees such as Atty. Dennis Gorecho.

The Awards Night took place at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Angkas is inspired by a documentary by Arbi Barbarona about a habal habal driver from Compostela Valley who picks up dead bodies using his motorcycle, according to Director Raineiro Yamson II. It was one of the films chosen for Cinemalaya this year.

Darryl Yap was among the executive producers of the film, which included Jonas Gaffud, Betsy Quisumbing, and Precy Ejercito.

Yap, of course, is the director of Maid in Malacanang, which many said attempted to revise the history of the last moments of EDSA Revolution.

“Angkas” failed to secure any awards from the independent film festival.

Why we fact-checked this

Intervention was needed to help clear up the misconception that the film Yap produced had won any awards. The organic reaction of the crowd in Cinemalaya is a far cry from the propaganda that the viewers are impressed by Yap’s “prowess” as a filmmaker.
